Artistic Director and Conductor
The orchestra was established in 2014 by Adrián Varela and Andrea Broughton with the aim of giving Lewisham its own permanent symphony orchestra. Its core members have been professional & amateur musicians from or resident in Lewisham, and also rising stars from top London music colleges, providing them with an arena to showcase their talent and gain invaluable experience as they enter the profession. The One Tree Hill Sinfonia is 'an orchestra of astonishing quality' featured in the Evening Standard, Metro and Slipped Disk, working in an inclusive, congenial atmosphere of mutual respect, offering exciting, memorable concerts for the benefit of the wider community.
Based in south-east London, the orchestra has hosted some of the finest international and UK musicians as soloists, including principals of London symphony orchestras, actress Diana Aubrey and star of Strictly Come Dancing, bandoneonist Julian Rowlands.
The Orchestra has social action, social inclusion and the demolishing of all types of barriers among its core values. Over the years it has supported a number of international, national and local charities helping different, diverse communities, and has a policy of inclusion, equality and respect at every level of the organisation. Its pioneering 'Sit Inside the Orchestra' scheme has allowed members of the public to experience the thrill of live orchestral playing from within the orchestra.
Andrea Broughton is general manager of the One Tree Hill Sinfonia. She is also a keen amateur violinist and regularly plays with a range of ensembles across London and the south east of the country. Andrea supports Adrian in the organisation of OTHS concerts and has also played in all the orchestra's concerts.
Adaq Khan’s love of music began when he started playing the violin at age 3 and after studying music at Durham University he quickly developed a career as a classical recording engineer.
He enjoys the challenge of producing polished recordings, whether performed in world class concert halls, local studios or in artists’ living rooms.
Adaq’s particular interest in one-of-a-kind projects has seen him record the only complete edition of Sorabji’s 8-hour piano solo work ‘Sequentia Cyclica’, massed ensembles of over 3,000 performers, and a banana (as part of the complete John Cage Song Books).
